Juniper Schultz was born through a traumatic delivery after her mother’s uterus ruptured on May 17, 2019.  After suffering a total lack of oxygen and unable to breathe on her own, she was transported to Children’s National Medical Center where she received immediate treatment for brain injuries. Her prognosis was very poor, and she remained in a coma. After 25 hours and many prayers, a miracle occurred, and Juniper woke up and began moving. Only a few days later she began to breathe on her own, and she spent the next 5 weeks in the NICU amazing even the doctors with her recovery. Juniper experienced a degree of brain damage, and the many challenges ahead are unknown. She was sent home with a GI tube as she no longer has the ability to suck or swallow. Now at home with her parents and big sister Ivy, she suffers from severe reflux, and is in constant severe pain. She sleeps no more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time, and her parents spend 24 hours a day trying to console her. Her father returned to work full-time on July 1st, although he gets little to no sleep at night, while her mother is constantly rocking and swaddling her, while doing housework, laundry and caring for their 4-year-old. While this family has significant challenges and obstacles to overcome, they remain grateful for Juniper’s life and hopeful for her recovery. They have demonstrated amazing strength and courage, and they never complain and remain positive.

The medical costs for Juniper continue to rise as she sees several different medical specialists weekly, has to undergo physical and occupational therapies and has home nursing visits.  These costs will continue over the next several months/years.
